Special hydrogel beads on basis of polyvinyl alcohol

Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) is a synthetic bulk polymer. Its low susceptibility to microbial degradation makes this gel matrix ideal for immobilisation of biocatalysts such as bacteria, yeasts, fungi, or enzymes. Typical fields of application are

  • bioconversion and biotransformation processes
  • environmental biotechnology
  • waste-water treatment
  • encapsulated starter cultures
Due to the chemical nature of the PVA hydrogel, the immobilized biocatalysts are insusceptible to contamination - which means less demands regarding sterility. The hydrogel matrix is not sensitive towards phosphate, citrate or monovalent ions like sodium or potassium which often is a problem with alginate beads. Furthermore the PVA hydrogel is hardly biodegradable.
The mechanical properties of geniaKats® make them suitable for different reactor types like stirred tanks, or fluidized and packed beds. The typical particle size is around 1 mm.
