Nitrifying cultures for biological ammonium oxidation We supply a living mixed culture of microorganisms for nitrification, i.e. for the microbial aerobic conversion of ammonia to nitrate. The oxidation of ammonia to nitrate is a process employing two kinds of organisms. Nitrosomonas spec. produce nitrite from ammonia, Nitrobacter spec. oxidize nitrite to nitrate. A stable nitrification can only be achieved when these two organisms are both present and their relation to each other is more or less constant. An optimal ratio of the two groups of microorganisms is assured by entraping in the PVA hydrogel as none of the two "specialists" is washed out under sub-optimal conditions. Moreover a high content of biomass is kept in continuous systems to survive e.g. phases of low substrate supply or low temperatures. Typical fields of application for geniaFoam® with entrapped nitrifying cultures are fishfarming, treatment of ammonium contaminated waste-water, fish tanks, or private and public ponds with ammonium problems. geniaFoam® can be provided in varied shapes that are compatible to many different technical system, e.g. filtration untis. Activated foams for treating waste waters The geniaFoam® system is suited for entrapping microbial cultures with special capabilities for degrading pollutants and contaminations. High concentrations of microbes can be achieved and maintained in the PVA hydrogel.
